The interesting thing to me is that there are tons of games out there that aren't really violent, at least not realistically so. I suppose you could consider something like Lemmings violent in that they often met a gruesome death, but it doesn't compare to the "realistic" FPS games out today. Those non-violent games just don't get a lot of play in the media. Puzzle Quest sold like hotcakes though, as have quite a few other "casual" games that aren't really violent.

There will always be violent games, and I don't see a problem with that. For me the real problem is that these FPS games often focus on the realistic graphics and violence and forget to make the game fun. Gears of War, Manhunt, etc. come to mind. They give you multiple ways to off someone, but the story sucks, and the gameplay is boring and repetitive. Give me something like Puzzle Quest over that any day.
