You can easily tell Steam to not auto-update any game, if you are worried about the issues brought up by >U.
The problem is that if you set Steam to not autoupdate a game, it will NOT run the game if an available update is detected. Everytime a user logs into Steam (and it is not in offline mode), all of the installed games are checked for available updates regardless of the automatic update setting. If a game is not at 100% (and it won't be if an update is detected), the game will NOT launch until it is updated. That setting keeps the update from being applied, but the game won't run until the user allows the update.
