See... this is why the whole idea of certain digital download methods will never fly in my book. Some companies want to control piracy by having the software log into a server somewhere and validate itself every third or fourth run, or whatever. They claim this is the future of software delivery and that CD/DVD's will be done away with (for the most part).
Hey, that's not me, that's what the industry is saying, and that's not news.
My stance towards the industy is this; Fine, you want to do it that way? Then you have to give me a 100% guarantee that I will NEVER have ANY problems authorizing my copy over the web. If your server goes down for any reason at the same time I'm trying to run the game, or if your business takes a nosedive and the bank seizes all your crap, including your validation servers, you had better be prepared to refund me every freakin' penny I paid for your game... and I don't care if it's 10 years after I bought it. If I buy a legal copy, then it's mine forever.
Most people would say that's impossible to guarantee.
Fine. Then I want absolutely nothing to do with a digital delivery scheme that uses the internet to validate a game after the initial purchase.
Game makers that insist on this method can simply suck my ass, 3D Realms included. Hell, I'd rather have all my games managed by StarForce. (I've never had any of the reported problems with StarForce anyway.)
