To be fair, I believe there's a person who sometimes posts here who has an autistic family member, and out of respect for that person, I don't think it's fair to play that particular card, or to mock autism...
Meh, while it's insensitive because it's specific, and a fair place to draw the line, I always hate doing so unless I know the person personally.
I mean, it isn't as specific as autism, but we all know someone with a retarded cousin, won't stop me from using the word. And we all have stupid family members, won't stop me from using that as an insult, either.
I typically draw the line at things that aren't necessarily insulting. Autism is more tragic, I suppose. "Gay" definitely doesn't work. "Female" does perfectly.
