I thought maybe the logo was derived from the cross of St George, so I googled: "history of the red cross".
The first hit is a bit of an eye opener about the U.S version!

The founder of the original Red Cross would doubtless be rather displeased by the modern time wasters.

They are also known elsewhere as Red Crescent and Red Lion (Sun was dropped in 1980) Good luck changing the name of hundreds of pubs in England!
