At the risk of outing myself as a non-geek... wtf is a sha1 hash?

It's like an MD5 hash, but stronger. Mostly used in LDAP.

If you don't know what an MD5 hash is, it's a fingerprint that lets you check if a file has been altered from it's original. If you run md5sum on a file, you get a hash back, and if it matches what everyone else's is, then you know it's not corrupted and/or hasn't been tampered with (had a virus added, etc.)
