Steam is garbage. I unfortunately won't be buying HL2, due to the Steam requirement. Flap, flap...yes I know the propaganda that you won't need steam to play single player, yea right!, until you need a patch, then it's login city, oops sorry someone hacked steam and your CD key is toast, please wait 6-8 weeks while we snap our carrots.
Other evil things about Steam:
- Bandwidth whore. (remember the game comp that was hosed due to Steam, and non steam games were affected too) - Bandwidth whore part 2/ TOS violator. Not only does it bork your bandwidth but it also whore`s your machine out to other Steam users so they can download the patch and other crap from you rather then Valve, saving them $$. And It most likely violates your provider's TOS by making a server out of your connection. (Yea, I know the providers rarely enforce it unless you're abusing it, but hey who's paying for the connection) - Gives them the power to whimsically dump stuff on your system. (yea I know you can turn it off, but is it off by default)
I'm old school, I shut down unnecessarily services, disable un-used hardware in bios, purchase MBs with integrated devices I need when I can. So the idea of having all this baggage with VERY LITTLE benefit to me is not very appealing, no matter how sugary the fanboys mix the kool-aid.
edit: gammar doh!
And finally HL2 subscription, wait you mean that instead of paying for the game once I can pay monthly forever, with no guarantee of new content or mods, cool, does it offer real-estate in Florida, and option to buy the Brooklyn Bridge too.
