I don't feel as if Romero screwed Quake up, and I don't see how you can say that, but you're entitled to your opinion. If by screwed up, you mean by id's public image with his superstardom and arrogance, then perhaps you're right. I think his levels were of great contribution to Quake. He made the first episode of Quake, including the boss stage, and the last boss in the end map. He added some level of interaction to the game, like how you had to use the environment to kill the bosses rather than just blowing the crap out of them with a rocket launcher. I know this is nothing big now, but there were few fps games then that did this. Willits and and the rest were also good map authors, and at the time Sandy Peterson's levels towards the last episode absolutely creeped the hell out of me with those long dark, cobalt blue corridors. Anyway, I'm rambling.
