Quake and Doom were far superior to the level of difficulty and heart pounding fun action than games have now. Most are on the rails shooters with scripted events and boring battles. So not such a good comparison - but I get it.
Checkpoint saves are fine. But there are times I want my own save spot. I like how Borderlands series does it. Save at a checkpoint, certain pole, or when you LEAVE the game. I dont need another save option. I agree with a previous post that it is largely over used and takes away from the game when you can hit auto save every 30 seconds. Lets go back to game mechanics like Demon's Souls. I didn't realize that when you exit Borderlands (1 and 2?) it saves for you, that is interesting. Manual saves to me make a game, a game. (instead of a movie or other entertainment). I can play as I want to in it, saving when I want to, instead of playing as somebody else has determined. I play games very slowly, in small amounts, thinking about every part of it, and checkpoint-only saves kills it for me. To me playing the same part over and over, especially a big battle, is frustrating enough to call it quits. And I think that is my biggest problem with checkpoint-only saves, that you have to replay parts. I don't feel that I have played a "game" when I get to the end of one, that's the control over it that I wish I had. Instead, I have been walked through it at somebody else's pace and thinking. Frustrating!
It's true what you say, games today are nothing like what they used to be (most anyway). I just recently played through Doom 1 and Doom 2, and they are incredible, even today! Action packed, the "oh shit, whats next??!!" feeling, playing on the edge of your seat! Awesome! |
