Newell: Most DRM "Dumb"

A blog called ih8evilstuff has a quote attributed to Valve's Gabe Newell in response to a question about DRM. Here's the good part: "As far as DRM goes, most DRM strategies are just dumb. The goal should be to create greater value for customers through service value (make it easy for me to play my games whenever and wherever I want to), not by decreasing the value of a product (maybe I'll be able to play my game and maybe I won't)." Sounds about right. Thanks GamePolitics.

No, even the retail box requires installation of steam and activation. Retail version of what? Nobody mentioned anything specific, including you. Yes Valves retail games require Steam. It's a one time online activation. Other games the don't even use Steam have done the same thing. The hundreds of other games on Steam have retail distro that is not linked to Steam. So are you just going to argue about a few specific products or the platform as a whole?
