A rolling demo for X3: Terran Conflict is now available, offering a look
at the latest installment in EGOSOFT's space combat series. This should not be
confused with a playable demo, as a rolling demo is non-interactive, offering
the chance to see what the game looks like using the actual game engine. As such
this rolling demo can also benchmark your system to show how it can handle
running the game. The 422 MB download is available on
AtomicGamer,
ComputerGames.ro,
FanGaming,
FileFront, Gamer's Hell,
and
Strategy Informer. X3: Terran Conflict was released a couple of
weeks ago, and can be purchased through
Steam.

And if I'm not mistaken it's the damn Glow Filter with weapons fire that has ALWAYS been a nasty hit on framerates.
Yeah but most weapons don't have that, the PPCs do. There must have been 900,000 threads on the forum BEGGING egosoft to come up with a different graphic for those bolts, but nope.
Creston as X3:R was 'Your Game', how does TC stand up? Is the story continued or basically free form?
Well, X2 was more my game. I never really got into Reunion much, as it felt exactly the same game as X2, with some better graphics thrown in. Though I played the shit out of Reunion with the Xtended Mod.
TC is basically the best of Reunion, plus the best of the Xtended Mod (though no Sohnen ) , plus a better UI plus a totally revamped (and completely AWESOME) BBS. The story is sort of continued in that the Terrans are now connected to the commonwealth (as you discover them at the end of Reunion in a shitty, fucked up mission where you have to fight 8000 Khaak in a fucking Mamba), and the races are making headway against the Khaak invasion, the Xenon are planning a raid etc.
But there's no more of the characters from the previous two games, you can decide which starting position you want to play (warning, do NOT play Bankrupt Assassin, as the paranid will stay forever hostile), and there are now five individual campaigns (of which I have found four, nobody seems to be able to figure out where the Paranid campaign is supposed to be) that you can play with whatever character you want.
The Terran campaign is pretty cool. The Argon campaign is pretty fucking shit, and the Boron campaign is cool and gives you a REALLY cool toy to play with, but it requires an absurd amount of resources to build. (I believe the final phase requires 3.25 BILLION credits worth of Microchips). The goner campaign is pretty cool too.
All in all the campaign mission overall have gotten a lot better, especially the Terran campaign. A mission has on average 10 or so objectives (consecutively) that will take you 30-60 minutes to complete, and they're fun to do. The argon campaign sucks, but really only because of two "escort shitty TS ships through unlimited spawning Khaak" mission. Everyone in the galaxy has a Jumpdrive, but the TSs that are oh so important for the sake of human life have to fucking fly through an infested sector. I bet it was Apoch that designed that mission. The fucker.
As for base building, it's pretty much the same, including the pita complex building. There was an awesome script in Reunion that made it a ton easier, and the author is currently working on converting it to TC.
All in all, if you ever liked an X game, you'll love TC. It's radically better than the others.
