It is very feasible that the Steam publishers would want their own way to track activations and installs At the inconvenience of legit users. This isn't just about tracking usage, that ability has been around since the inception of serial #'s for online multiplayer. This is about preventing usage. The only people they are preventing usage from are legit users. Pirates dont care about it as it doesn't effect them.
How exactly am I downplaying Steam? I actually demonstrated how relevant Steam is as it already does what the DRM does, but without the limits. But as always I'm sure you have it all twisted in your head and will spew forth more magic facts from thin air.
why would or should Valve do their job for them and who would guarantee that Valve gets the job done correctly and who would pay for the support expenses and all that? Hmmm, well seeing as Valve is in the business of hosting digital distribution, I don't think they would stay in business very long by keeping the other companies usage statistics to themselves. Do you? Contracts are signed. Money changes hands. Valve has to support the publishers on Steam, otherwise they don't have a business.
They monitor and do bans for VAC, but they also monitor everything else. Every time an account is logged into, every time a game is activated through Steam and the location of where that occurred. I've seen the posts from dumbasses on the Steam Forums. 'I let a friend in "random far away country" log into my account to play "insert game here" and now my account is gone.' |
