Creative Labs sends along a statement refuting claims by Asus that their
latest audio cards offer
EAX 5 support: With respect for you and your readers, we wish to share
this important information. With its recent driver updates, Asus is misleading
its customers by suggesting that its sound cards now support EAX 5. Asus sound
cards do not support EAX 5, nor do they support EAX 3 or EAX 4. There are a
small number of PC game titles that specifically query the audio device on the
system to see if EAX 5 is available before they will attempt to render more than
64 3D simultaneous audio voices. The new Asus drivers are falsely reporting EAX
5 capabilities in order to get these games to ouptut 3D audio on Asus sound
cards. Asus customers are not getting a genuine EAX Advanced HD experience with
this driver update. Furthermore, the several hundred games that support EAX 3 or
EAX 4 for delivering in-game effects will not provide those effects from Asus
sound cards.

I grabbed the X-Fi extreme gamer cause my past 2 sound devices (Sound..something.. the one the certified ones for nforce 2 mobos, and a TB santa cruze) failed to do 3d sound reliably. When i built my newest pc last fall, I knew I wanted to take 5.1 surround sound more seriously so I picked up the extremegamer card, the cheapest X-Fi card.
I've had creative before, and admit without a doubt, when I had the SBlive when it first came out, I was disgusted with the driver bloat. I was however prepared to eat the driver bloat again this time around. I was pleasantly surprised however when looking for the newest drivers to install when I got the card, that I stumbled over their web edition of their drivers. All the functionality and none of the bloat. I am also pleased to say that I have had NO problems with my x-fi card. No sound quality issues, all the latest games have had glorious 5.1 sound. This is in both vista and XP btw.
Sorry if you are having issues with yours still, maybe reinstall windows and the web drivers and shoot again?
