X-COM to Return?

Shacknews has a report piecing together the case suggesting that Irrational Games is working on a new installment in the X-COM series of UFO strategy games using the Unreal 3 engine. They found a reference to an X-COM game on a list of Irrational Credits in a (since edited) legal document, and point out that Take 2 Interactive is owner of both Irrational Games and the X-COM license.

The only good x-com games were the first two, the rest blew. To be honest, I didn't care much for the second's subject matter, but it still had the killer gameplay. Why the hell are these game companies trying to reinvent the wheel with x-com (and clones) rather than using the original model and extending it?
