Out of the Blue

Our lawnmower bought the farm recently, with just enough of the warm weather remaining to warrant replacing it before next spring. After a little shopping MrsBlue decided she wanted to get an old-fashioned non-power mower, as it should be pretty reliable, and at about a quarter-acre, our lawn is certainly a manageable size. I was a little skeptical of her claim of wanting to mow the lawn with this herself, but I figure I can use more exercise than I currently get should that prove to be overly ambitious of her. So far she's been good to her word, however, as we brought this thing home and she mowed the entire lawn as soon as I had it assembled.

Actually, I lie.. the way to go on a yard of any size is to have a patch of grass big enough for lying around in when you feel like it, and no more (and then a simple swing-cutter should be plenty for tending to something like that). Grass is a very wasteful plant in so many ways.

It has 2 uses: preventing erosion and looking nice.

I live on a decently sloped hill in a nice suburban area (large lawns, trees, etc). If there was no grass in any of the lawns (save for a small rectangle) heavy rains would be a problem. While the root system on grass is practically nothing, it helps prevent the upper layer of soil from turning into a small mudslide.

We just mow and fertilize the lawn. Normally we get enough rain to take care of watering the grass by itself. We rarely use sprinklers and such unless we're getting hit by a heat wave. And even then, we'd rather save the money on water than have a nice looking lawn.
