Out of the Blue

We had the plumber out yesterday to investigate some water that is collecting in the basement in the washer/furnace/heater area. His son had previously looked at this but was unable to determine for certain if it was the hot water heater, the washer, or some of the related pipes in the area. The bad news was that it is indeed the classically oxymoronic hot water heater (why would you need to heat hot water?). He's going to be back early next week to replace it. It could be a lot worse… I think there's a cliché about at least one such repair popping up immediately after one moves into a house, but this thing held out for around six years before going.
