Well it turns out there is a solution to my QuickTime problem from yesterday. Thank you to Raven, the first of a few folks to send along a link to the Standalone QuickTime Player. It is indeed quite obscure, and it does not seem too cynical to suggest that this is intentional, hoping to inspire iTunes installs.
