Out of the Blue

It's deja vu at the BlueTower, as I am going to take Gunnar the super puppy to the vet today to have a couple of his front teeth examined, as it looks like he's chipped them. This is on the heels of Hudson the wonder dog recently needing a cracked tooth extracted, and of course, my own long history of dental woes. Both are dogs are sweethearts, and I gladly take some credit under the 'dogs take after their owners' theory, so I guess in the same vein, I must accept some of the blame that their teeth take after mine as well. Here's hoping this doesn't turn out to be a major thing for the little (60 pounds little) guy.

133. Re: New Orleans Sep 1, 2005, 21:37 Halsy
Deficit spending is not a desirable state and as a result there has been a movement in American Politics since the 1970s or so to cut back on size and spending of Federal government in order to eliminate the deficit.

Wrong. Reagan was the first president who stopped servicing 100% of the national debt and started running balloon deficits. In 1981, the deficit was 80 billion. 2 years later is was 200 billion. Reagan also increased the size of government by a whopping 30%. Federal spenidng for low-cost housing went from $32 billion in 1981 to $7 billion in 1987. That alone created permanent homelessness in the U.S. And that says nothing of the 1.7 TRILLION dollar "bail out" of the S&Ls.

Well everyone, to include you, seems ready, willing and able to law blame for this disaster entirely on the federal government and specifically Bush. I think it was Creston that pointed out that Congress overwhelmingly approved the budget that cut spending for the disaster prevention analysis. Clearly in hindsight that was a mistake but the majority of Congress (to include many of your infalliable Democrats) approved of that decision, so it's not entirely Bush's responsibility.

And WHY did they do that? Because they HAD to make cuts for Bush's oil war - you remember, the one he lied to everyone about in order to get it goin. Congress - foolishly - gave him the benefit of the doubt, and now everyone is paying for it - except Bushco and pals who are aughing all the way to the bank.

The failed prevention and the management of this disaster leaves an awful lot to be desired. But to say that this is entirely the fault of Bush and Co is a gross oversimplification that has more to do with an opportunistic partisan attack than rational analysis of policy

No it's not. See above.
