Evil Genius Demo

The promised Evil Genius Demo is now available, allowing the chance to try out Elixir Studios' now-gold bad-guy strategy game first hand. Here's the description from VU Games: "The Evil Genius demo is an exciting introduction to Elixir Studios' world domination simulation. All of the basic principles of being an evil megalomaniac are available to be mastered. Gamers can build a secure underground base complete with armories, barracks, and all-important freezer rooms. They’ll train an awesome army of brutal mercenaries armed to the teeth and prepare to repel the Forces of Justice who've caught wind of their whereabouts. They’ll extract information about their plans by capturing and interrogating prisoners, and use their powerful henchmen to defeat the martial arts legend and super agent, Jet Chan, in a final chaotic showdown." The 200 MB download, which provides a tutorial along with sample gameplay, premiered on GameSpot DLX (registration required), and mirrors are now available on 3D Downloads, 3D Gamers, ActionTrip, Computer Games Online, FileFront, Filerush (torrent), FileShack (registration required), Fragland.net, Gameguru Mania, Gamer's Hell, and Worthplaying.

I personally had a blast playing it. Lots of great humor and the game seems pretty well polished to me. The demo is essentially a tutorial that explains the basic workings of the game. Nothing like capturing an agent and having your Evil Genius gloat over him in his cell, complete with a comical evil genius laugh. Unfortunately, in the demo all the traps are disabled. I was hoping to get at least one, but I can wait. As expected, there are several rooms unavailable and several components for rooms. Your men train each other in the training room and there are heirarchies to follow in that respect. (ie. a guard trains a construction worker to be a guard, then a mercenary trains a guard to be a mercenary, and so on.) Most demos that I play tend to have little impact on my interest in the game, but after this one I'm looking forward to it. The only negative I found was that the men sometimes got blocked in by construction if they got off on the wrong side of the bed. (You'll know what I mean when you try it) It would have been nice if they could just climb over the bed, but once you get used to that limitation, you start building your rooms with sufficient room just in case. To their credit, there is a warning that goes off if you build something that blocks off an exit/entry to another item.
