Thanks Judeman for a forum post clarifying how to get my recalcitrant status bar to get back on the job, courtesy of the annoyance fighters at Annoyances.org. Thanks to Seth Torkko for also sending along the Microsoft Knowledgebase Article on the topic. Finally, thanks to the incredible number of you who offered the simple approach of setting the option in a single window and closing it... I guess I should have been clearer that the straightforward approach was not actually working, but I presumed that was pretty obvious.
