A post to the Lock
On: Modern Air Combat General Discussion Forums (thanks Frans and SimHQ)
by Eagle Dynamics' Carl C. Norman offers information and reflections on the
delay of the release of the Lock On: Modern Air Combat Demo ( story)
that has inspired considerable consternation on the game's forums, and even an
online petition. The update shares the fans' disappointment that the demo is
not available, and goes onto more of the background behind the decision,
offering this conclusion that places this in a bit of perspective: While
you might not see or appreciate this, the good news is that Ubi Soft appears to
be committed to a strong launch of Lock On. Their decision to coordinate the
demo release with the major media outlets and magazines is good news in the long
run. In the short run it is disappointing for all of the active forum members
who have expressed your interest and support for this product and expected a
demo this week. My understanding is that this decision was made by Ubi Soft as a
means of coordinating the launch of the demo to coincide with its availability
on magazine CDs and in promotional efforts by Ubi Soft and the Media. I have
been told that when the final product is finished Ubi Soft has a promotional and
marketing plan that they are putting in place to make this a big international
launch with Press coverage and promotional efforts. I spoke to a Marketing
Manager at Ubi Soft that I have known and worked with in the industry for over
ten years. She assures me that the commitment is there to launch Lock On in a
big way and that the retailers are very interested in this title. Let’s not
let this incident cause the momentum to slip for Lock On. If Lock On is a
success then there is a much better chance for this genre of products to expand
and thrive.

(Can I call you Carl?)
Carl, just because the friendly UbiSoft people tell you something doesn't mean it's true. They've been lying to the game communities for forever now, so it's nothing new to us. You sound fairly wet behind the ears to this PR-speak, and I can tell because you sound like you sincerely believe them, so let me clue you in to something about UbiSoft.
They're pathological liars.
I know that's difficult for you to consider, especially when these guys cut your paycheck. I know, and I feel sorry for you, but that's just how it is. I'm sure that your Marketing Manager said all sorts of nice and positive things to you, and made you feel all warm and good inside. That's typical expected from them. It's more effective if they're nice to you right before they lie to your face -- it makes you more receptive for when they have to do it again. Think "crocodile tears".
Not that you can do much about it, though. I'm just letting you know this stuff. If you're going to stay awake at night staring at the ceiling, I'd rather you do it because you depressingly know the truth, rather than do it because you've got big dreams of what a great publisher UbiSoft is, before they're dashed to pieces, like a seagull picking apart a clam.
By the way, if you'd like to see the absolutely pathetic relations that UbiSoft has with their customers, why don't you check out the Raven Shield forums sometime? That's their latest and greatest aborted product, which has no end is sight, and a battalion of screaming and pissed off players in it's wake. But then I'd be pissed off too if I was reamed up the ass like UbiSoft likes to do to people. Thank gosh I know a bit more than they all do, eh?
