SEC Game Probe

Regulators Launch Probe Into Video Game Industry (thanks HomeLAN Fed) reports on an "apparently wide-ranging probe opened by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission into the game industry." The article lists Acclaim, Activision, and THQ as having been contacted by the SEC about this, and quotes some experts about the "unusually wide scope for a regulatory probe" this all represents (the first is from Nancy Grunberg, a former enforcement official at the SEC):

"I'm not sure I know of an example of where they launched an investigation of an entire industry like this," Grunberg told Reuters. "That does sound a little unusual to me, except for the example of the analysts for the major broker-dealers."

"I think the SEC is very likely trying to understand what industry practices are and see if these guys have the potential to manipulate earnings," analyst Michael Pachter of Wedbush Morgan Securities told Reuters.

Maybe there are some Gamers in the SEC and they're fed up with crappy games and the existence of consoles that serve only to degrade a once great industry. (Yes, I have my tinfoil hat on :P)

Additionally the may be irritated by the fact Game developers are obtuse and don't learn from each other. examples:

Duke Nukem Forever

Multi-player games that don't have the following:
- Spawn Camp prevention
- Lack of Squelch options
- Lack of Balance
- Lack of Stamina Bars (aka Outlaws)
- Security schemes that beat the crap of their CD-ROMS
- Allowing players to utter the word owned

There's more but my tin foil hat fell off. Must think conformist thoughts: Johnny Ashcroft is my hero, he's double plus good

Or it just be they're targeting another industry to shake down for bribage.
