Pirates!

Atari and Firaxis Announce Sid Meier's Pirates! on GameSpot has the announcement that had previously been hinted at that a remake of Sid Meier's classic seafaring strategic RPG is in the works at Firaxis. In related news, Atari and Firaxis Games Enter into Long-Term Development-Publishing Deal is the press release that covers this news, as well as plans for "a variety of additional properties from the CIVILIZATION® franchise over the next several years; and the transfer of rights to Firaxis of certain classic Sid Meier games, some of which will be published by Atari." Here's a bit from GameSpot about the Pirates! project, which is expected for release next year:

"We're at a point where it makes sense to reimagine the game for the 21st century," said Meier, who suggested parallels between the open-ended exploration of games like Grand Theft Auto III and the original Pirates!, since the original game encouraged players to explore the high seas in search of adventure. However, according to Firaxis president Jeff Briggs, the new game may put more emphasis on role-playing elements. Specifically, players will be able to truly decide to be noble sea captains in service to the king, or dastardly, scurvy pirates in search of innocent vessels to plunder.

I'm happy, but at the same time extremely nervous about how this will come out.
