Preparing for DOOM

Prepare to Meet Thy Doom on Wired (thanks John W. Simms) is a preview of DOOM III offering a bit of the history of id Software, the concept behind the game, and a look at what to expect. The article also offers this fall as a projected release date for the project, and provides some quotes from the folks at id, including speculation from John Carmack that technological advances may soon be rendering him obsolete:

"There's a real chance that the next-generation rendering engine will be a stable, mature technology that lasts in more or less its basic form for a long time," he says. "Programmers will move from being engine coders to being technical directors in the Pixar style."
