Out of the Blue

I may be a relative newcomer to the joys of the automotive world, but I am still an old codger nonetheless, so my tastes in such things tend to run in an old codger direction, which is toward the Detroit muscle cars of my childhood. Therefore it was quite a treat when I got to spend a bit of time yesterday helping a couple of buddies shoot some photos and video of a 1972 455 H.O. Pontiac Trans Am, white with blue stripes, shaker scoop, the whole deal. The neat part is that I got to drive this beast for a short while, which gets me thinking that this would be a great adult theme park ride. I know I'd be willing to pay for a ticket to listen to that baby's engine roar, much less drive it again. On the other hand, fuel economy is what killed off big block beasts like this in the first place, so I'm not sure just how much a ticket for such a ride would be (not to mention the costs of insuring folks who are controlling a bazillion horsepower). But having played with computer simulations meant to portray this experience, I can say that there's nothing but the real thing to do this justice (I guess that could be said about most things though).

20. Ah... wish I had my Olds Cutlass 455 Sep 18, 2002, 17:32 OCed_5150

Yes... Big block power is what seperates the men from the boys.

1973 Olds 2 Door, 455 CI, Holly 750 CFM vacuum secondaries, and a single plane aluminum intake. Do 140+ MPH without breaking a sweat.

But at 12 MPG Highway... it sucked the gas like water.
