Out of the Blue

I commented here when 02/02/02 passed on the calendar, joking this rare convergence would not happen again for just over a year, but THE FOX sends along a note pointing out that today is a date that is truly unusual if you write it in what I joked is that oddball European manner: DD/MM/YYYY (20/02/2002). I haven't really tried to work all the way through it, but if our feral friend's calculations are correct, this palindrome date will actually only occur twice more under our current calendar system: over 100 years from now on 21 December 2112 and again another thousand(!) years hence, on 30 March 3003.

I have never understood why the American's have their dates written out of order (MM/DD/YY) Is their any actual reason behind this method? I am curious what the reasoning was... Do their watches show the time like this: MM:HH:SS??
