On IGDA & AIAS Awards

Nominees Named for Game Developers Choice Awards; Recipients to be Announced at CMP Media's Game Developers Conference is the press release announcing the IGDA's annual nominees, including the following group that's up for game of the year: Black & White (Lionhead Studios), Grand Theft Auto III (DMA Design/Rockstar Games), Halo: Combat Evolved (Bungie Studios), ICO (Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc.), and Max Payne (Remedy Entertainment). The inclusion of that last nominee, Max Payne, offers a segue to point out GameSpot's AIAS award nominees story about the recently announced Interactive Achievement Awards Finalists (story) quotes 3D Realms' Scott Miller on the subject of the exclusion of Max Payne from any AIAS nominations as saying: "I've been told confidentially by one of the voters for the nominees that this is because neither 3D Realms, nor Remedy, is a member of AIAS," while quoting an AIAS rep as saying: "The integrity of the system, coupled with a broad-based voting population of Academy members, make the Interactive Achievement Awards the most credible, respected, and recognized awards for interactive entertainment software." This whole situation is the inspiration for an editorial called No Room for Integrity in AIAS Awards? on The Adrenaline Vault.

9. Well yes, but... Feb 12, 2002, 17:20  Chris Johnson

>>"AVault complains that some publishers could be padding the nomination list by paying the entry fees for their members, thus increasing the ammount of "potential votes." How's is this any different then a high profile "supervisor" (as is 3D Realms with Max Payne) attaching their name and their publisher spending countless dollars for advertising? "

The problem lies in the fact that you could have two games of equal worth and ability, but if one is independedntly published, or published by a non-member, and the other is published by a company with 1000 members in the AIAS. One gets nominated by 1000 votes, solely based on the fact that those people paid for the privelege of padding a ballot box. Period.

As for your seeing it's no different from 3DRealms having their name as a producer for Max Payne (or any other similar situation (say Mechwarrior 3 for example)... um... sorry but the two have nothing in common.

(Granted, the use of Max as an example of the inequities is a bit self-serving and biased, but it doesn't change the situation one way or another.)
