Broken Sword 5 Episodic; First Episode Next Month

Revolution Software announces Broken Sword 5: The Serpent's Curse will be presented as two episodes, with the first to be released on December 4th and the conclusion to follow in January. "Whilst this is very much a classic Broken Sword game in terms of production values and sense of adventure, weíre really breaking new ground with The Serpentís Curse," said Charles Cecil, Founder & CEO, Revolution Software. "The success of our Kickstarter appeal has allowed us to be hugely ambitiousóeach episode is a full sized game in its own right. So we will be publishing two action-packed adventures in close succession. The early response to the game has been hugely positive with some suggesting this is the best Broken Sword yet." Word is episode one will conclude with a cliffhanger:

Revolution Software today confirmed that Broken Sword 5: The Serpentís Curse will release worldwide for PC on December 4th. In addition, the developer has revealed that this Broken Sword adventure will, unlike any before, run over two thrilling episodes, concluding in January 2014.

Broken Sword_cover_Fix_FINALThe game set crowdfunding records for a UK-developed game back in September 2012, when it raised $850,000 from 15,000 backers on Kickstarter. Those that pledged to receive a PC, Mac, or Linux copy of the game will get each episode as it become available.

The first part of the game will debut on PC / Mac / Linux through Steam, GOG.com, and Revolutionís own website store on December 4th, with a PlayStation Vita version to follow later in the month. The concluding episode of the game will be published on PC in January 2014. iOS and Android versions will follow shortly after each PC episode.

One of their people explained on his blog that they're doing the episodic thing mostly so they can deliver something to backers before Christmas rather than delay the whole game into next year. Seems OK to me. All the backers get both episodes anyway, and a 1 1/2 month gap between episodes doesn't sound too bad given they're saying the overall game is as long or longer than Broken Sword 1 was (a fairly long game by today's standards). And I'm used to episodic from Telltale, King Art and other adventure studios these days, I guess ...

I suspect there might actually be a tech reason as well, though. I know from the same blog that they've been struggling with size limitations on the mobile releases (their source art is 4k res, so they could even do proper retina versions for the high-end tablets). Splitting it in two should help.
