Star Citizen Passes $21 Million

The Roberts Space Industries website has a new Letter from the Chairman celebrating the news that Star Citizen has surpassed the $21 million mark in crowd-sourced funding. Now that the Salvage Mechanic has been unlocked, they reveal a $23 million goal for the space combat game as the Salvage Mechanic career path. Here's a bit:

Iím proud to announce that the Star Citizen community has brought us to $21 million in crowd funding just shy of our first anniversary! Your support is now allowing the project to expand on ideas in ways we didnít originally think possible. Every additional pledge makes Star Citizen a better experience. At the $21 million, you unlock the full salvage mechanic, which allows us to produce the assets needed to make salvaging an in-depth game mechanic akin to exploration or piracy!

  • Salvage Mechanic: Salvage isnít an aside: itís a career, with its own mechanic, story tie-ins and universe-shaping endgames. Search the galaxy for a host of valuable and interesting secrets using both the flight and FPS components. Discover the secrets of the ancient Hadesians, locate valuable components and cargoÖ or go down in history the first to make contact an entirely new alien race!

In addition, we are unlocking a new $23 million goal: the addition of a Xiían Scout as a playable asset in the game. Weíve recently begun putting together concept art of Xiían worlds, which got us thinking about the gameís Xiían ships: how can we make them play differently than the standard human ships? We have a few ideas and with this stretch goal we can put them into the game! In addition to alien designs and interfaces, the Xiían craft will feature a totally different maneuvering system.

I like space. I like ships. I like flying ships in space. I like a lot of the ideas that are going in this game, it sounds like a dream. Most games that sound like a dream are merely ok - or bad. Sure, I bought into SC - I will be getting my copy of the game when it comes out. But I just don't understand why people are buying ships for a game that is far from being ready? How do you know you want that ship? You haven't been able to see how it performs in the damn game! Every MMO I've ever played nerfs and buffs the classes all the time - that's going to happen here. I mean, they look cool sitting in your hanger, but you can just look at the screenshots if you want to see how it looks. You still don't know how it's going to fly. It makes no sense to me. I wouldn't buy ships with real money in any case - buying virtual items usually rubs me the wrong way - but I REALLY don't understand buying these things on complete faith. Faith that the game warrants the expenditure, but more than that, faith that the ship is worth the cost.

It's mostly because of Lifetime Insurance (LTI). Many people believe that they are going to have a HUGE advantage over others by buying ships with LTI now as opposed to new players who will have to pay for insurance.

Of course no one knows right now how it's gonna turn out but CIG has hinted at the very obvious fact that LTI will only be a minor perk. Insurance will be very affordable and I think we all know it has to be unless CIG does not want any new players to join the game - ever.

There's also going to be a natural progression of ships where the old models (including the pledge ships) get exchanged for newer models. So after a while into the live game (a year, two..?) no one will have LTI anymore since no one will be flying around with the old ships anymore (LTI sticks to the hull, not the account).

It's actually pretty funny to watch all the hysterical little school girls on the RSI forums who are hoping to score with the quarterback tomorrow (1 year anniversary sale launches tomorrow) not knowing that he has a smelly breath and a hairy ass. Oh well. Open wide, guys! Open wide!!!
