Out of the Blue

I went to the eye doctor yesterday, as the lenses in my glasses are so scratched they are becoming a problem. I also had a worrisome medical question about my vision that I thought I'd put to him as a precursor to asking my M.D. about it, and he was able to provide an answer. I've had a couple of incidents where I suffered brief periods of impaired vision, sort of like you'd get from looking at a bright light and then looking away. This was worrisome, to say the least, but his diagnosis was about as benign as I could have hoped, as he explained I've been suffering what are known as Ocular Migraines. These are apparently actual migraines, but the good news, and the reason I consider this somewhat benign, is because these are not accompanied by any pain, and they have been brief in duration as well as infrequent, so this is not really a problem that needs much solving. This is in contrast to the kind of scenarios that ran through my mind when encountering this, as I suffered some Woody Allen-style concerns about things like blindness and brain tumors, so this is obviously a relief.

Back before becoming health conscious (well I guess I was always conscious of what I ate, I just didn't care) I would now and again cruise thru McD and just get four McDoubles for $4:
1560 calories, 116% fat, 44% carbs, 140% sodium

It's easy enough to buy (relatively) cheap and far healthier foods at the supermarket, stuff that doesn't take long to prepare. My brownbag for the past 5 months has consisted of a banana, a turkey or ham sandwhich, yogurt, wheat thins, and a diet soda. I make that lunch in the time it takes my coffee to brew each morning.

400 calorie dinner? What are you, a woman?

Yeah exactly. I eat a lot of bad stuff, I just prepare it myself because I can control the portion size, sodium and etc. Bacon every few days, omelettes, italian food, stuffed chicken breasts, etc. I've always found the people who eat the most fast food are usually the ones who simply don't know how to cook. It's a shame because you can eat way better food and still shave off calories. I used to eat fast food in college when I didn't know how to cook but back then it was a lot cheaper too. It feels like these days for what you get you can hit the grocery store and get several meals worth.

Brown bagging lunches saves you a fortune and inches off your waistline when you hit your 30s too. I still eat out once in awhile to socialize with people at work, I just tend to do it when they're going to actual restaurants to eat.
