SimCity 2.0 Plans

The EA Forums have an update from SimCity senior producer Kip Katsarelis with word on plans for an upcoming version 2.0 patch for the city building game (thanks IncGamers). Here's a chunk:

We've been heads down addressing the key issues we’re seeing reported from our community. This includes city rollbacks, lost progress, and the return of features like Cheetah Speed and Leaderboards. Like you, we want all of these resolved ASAP, which is why they are the top priorities in our studio. Matter of fact, we have all of these in a QA environment, giving them a thorough test before we release them back to you, the fans.

On top of this, we’re also working on a number of bug fixes and other overall improvements that we’re planning to include in future Updates. Just last week we released two Updates 1.7 and 1.8, which included traffic fixes and other general improvements. For the future, in Update 2.0, we’ll be addressing the Recycling Center bug, fixing the fire engine clumping, improving the efficiency of Street Cars, and increasing the radius of river water. We’re also fixing the tuning on Casinos and are making them more profitable. These are just a handful of the substantial changes coming in Update 2.0.

Keep in mind, if you don’t see a particular fix present in an Update, this doesn't mean we’re not working on it, or we’re not aware of it. Our team is constantly getting reports about the top issues being raised and this is helping us prioritize what we need to address. There are some issues that are more challenging and will take more time. If you have feedback, please visit our forums. In the meantime, we’ll continue to address the top issues in our updates. We’ll keep working while you’re playing.

I pre-ordered SimCity and I was screaming bloody murder along with the other upset fans over the server issues, but I've gotten over it (like any adult should) and I play it almost on a daily basis now.

There is already a fun game here and more efforts from the Maxis team to make improvements are welcomed. If you take away the DRM aspect, it's no more buggy than ANY and EVERY other game that has ever been released. Some people just elect to keep beating the dead horse even after it's been reduced to a puddle of dried blood and any interested parties have moved on to topics that actually have a point.
Were you now? A look at your post history and I see one previous about simcity after its release, one that says the always online/DRM simcity thing was ok, they just should have educated people better. In that same post, you termed the complaints "all this wailing and gnashing of teeth" and that all of the stuff happening was "simply a case of bad marketing"

As for no more buggy than every game. LOL WUT? Last few AAA games I bought first week (x-com, hitman, bioshock), I had NO problems like this. I was NEVER prevented from playing the game I bought because of some stupid always online DRM crap. I NEVER had to wait in a queue to play. I NEVER had features from my games disabled because EA said so. All of those things DID happen with simcity. NONE of those problems has anything to do with marketing or if they had the word "online" in the title. And none of that even touches on the underlying foundational problems and bugs with simcity. I've seen a few minor bugs in x-com (most of the "showstopper" ones in that game that people found were because of something that occasionally didn't auto end the turn and people didn't realize you could hit a key to manually end your turn). Some people have had a few crashes in bioshock, I think its because it has some memory leaks. I haven't had any actual crashes, but I've noticed sometimes when it gets low on memory windows complains. Yet it still hasn't prevented me from playing or enjoying the game.

In fact... now that I think of it... the last game I played that had similar problems of not being able to log in and getting in a queue... and also had disabled features... was Diablo 3. With, shocker I know, also an always online requirement. One that apparently wasn't all that important since its going to support offline for consoles.

Before that... wait I'm remembering another game I bought, one that I bought on a cheap sale... Settlers 7. Even when I bought it year(s) after release, it still had occasional server burps that prevented me from playing since it had... shocker... always online DRM.

I'm sensing a pattern here. One that says I shouldn't buy games that are always online if I plan to play them primarily single player.
