More on Thief

The Eidos Montreal Community has more on the release of new details about Thief, the new installment in the Thief series of stealth games. There's also an info dump from the new Game Informer on NeoGAF (thanks VG247). Here's part of what Eidos Montreal has to say about the game:

For those of you who might be new to the franchise, Thief is Eidos-Montreal’s latest title. There is a rising tide of fear in the City that created and defined Garrett, hatred saturates every stone and whilst the rich prosper, the less fortunate face misery and repression. Ravaged with disease and famine, the people wait for something to change.

You take on the iconic role of Garrett, the Master Thief. In this first-person adventure featuring intelligent design, you will be able to take full control and freely choose your path through the game’s levels, using strategy and intuition to decide how to approach and overcome each challenge. Garrett must step from the shadows and uncover the truth before his world is torn apart forever.

Thief will be available in 2014 for PC, PlayStation®4, and other next-generation consoles.

It sounds like they're fundamentally changing the nature of the game, though. Whereas earlier Thief games were about infiltrating a place and remaining undetected, this new game is about being "forced" into "impossible situations" and then "escaping". Garrett is going from being the hunter to being the prey. That's a big change.

You might say combat is only an option, but we don't know that, and in any case it will affect the design of maps and game systems. If their goal is to force players into impossible situations, that will guide their level design, it will guide stealth possibilities, it will guide tool design, and so on. We don't know the end result, but their philosophy doesn't sound like a Thief game to me.

Remember that Eidos had the possibility of "ghosting" in DXHR, but it wasn't actual ghosting (Dishonored got this wrong too). If they don't understand what ghosting actually is, I don't trust them to make a worthy Thief game.
