I liked both of the prior Bond movies, although I was a big fan of the Brosnan era and don't think Craig makes a good Bond. But Skyfall, ugh. Craig is the best Bond behind Connery and Skyfall is one of the best Bond filsm period. All intelligent and right thinking people know this because it is a fact. I hope my internet sarcasm detector is just broken. Craig is a great Bond, I agree but Skyfall was a huge disappointment. The sheer amount of stupid plot sequences involved in setting up Javier Bardems little revenge scenario bordered on insane. The new Q was pandering so hard to a new generation of viewer that I almost expected him to start checking Twitter. The lack of gadgetry was intended to be tongue in cheek regressive for the older folks but many of them like those aspects of the movies. Bond backstory? Sacrilege! I don't need to hear about Bonds childhood, he's best left ambiguous, the mystery is one of the big draws of the character. Playing home alone at the end of the movie was just the final straw for me.
It was better than Quantum of Solace but let's be honest, that's a pretty low bar. It falls way short of Casino Royale, I'd rank Skyfall alongside some of the poorer Brosnan films. It was very bombastic but not terribly satisfying once you get beyond the visual spectacle. |
