SimCity: Details on Player Region Limits and Color-Blindness Mode

Maxis creative director Ocean Quigley tweets about how many regions players will be able to own in the upcoming SimCity reboot: "You can have up to 10 regions (in total, regardless of whether they're private or shared with other players)" (thanks Joao). Also, Destructoid has details on how the game will have about 18 different visual filters, saying the developers are taking particular mercy on those (like myself) with color vision deficiencies: "Depending upon your form of colorblindness, you have different transforms. If you are red-green colorblind, you don't have much sensitivity in the red-green range. So what I've had to do for that is to pull some of the stuff that would normally be merged together into the blue channel and to pop the contrast on red and green as much as possible so that people that have some limited sensitivity to red green can still see what's going on," Ocean Quigley explains. "These transforms are collectively called daltonism. So we've done basically those transforms for the three most common forms of colorblindness." On a related note, there are hands-on previews of the game based on a few hours with the beta on Computer and Video Games, IGN, Kotaku, PC Gamer, and Shacknews.

Also, beta is still inaccessible this morning due to server load. Ha.

And people defend this shit. No wonder gamers are considered the most spineless of all consumers.

Well, I am spineless so here goes.

It's a beta, opened (partly) to the public for the first time. There are very good reasons to hate always-online but this is not one. Having the ridiculous expectation of a free beta working properly the first time it's stress tested just makes you sound petty IMHO.

Again, always-online is not a good thing and we're right to complain. But not on the bases that a fucking beta isn't working perfectly.

It's news to me that we're considered spineless. I thought we were considered the opposite, bitchy moaning whiners who are never happy and you're not dispelling that.

An unfinished product is unfinished! DAMN YOU EA!

Edit: You'll have a point when the servers inevitably fail on launch day, because then paying customers are getting what they describe as a finished product.

No offense, but what you are saying I heard it all before, right before Diablo 3 launched.

Always-online DRM, with saves stored on EA, this kind of DRM in gaming and in anywhere else, should never be accepted by anyone, regardless of the series where this is implemented. This is publishers saying fuck off to customers and customers saying thank you may we have another? and buying these games, therefore supporting these shady, crappy business practices.

I am against SimCity not because of the quality of the game, which I am ok if people like it though IMO it won't touch SC2000 or even SC4, what I'm totally opposed is to these business practices, to this growing trend of publishers wanting full control so they can nickel and dime gamers to death.

Gamers shouldn't accept these business practices, yet they all gladly do. In no other industry will you find consumers more spineless than gamers.
