A Best of Kickstarter 2012 feature has some eye-opening statistics on the year in videogame crowdsourcing. Word is 561,574 backers pledged $83,144,565 to 2,796 projects. Thanks nin via Kotaku.

Quit using FTL as example. That was well into development prior to the kickstarter. So? So are many other games on kickstarter. They tend to be the ones that get funding. Yes, some of them get funded that are nothing more than an idea (double fine is one of the bigger examples).
It takes time to complete video game projects. Most of the bigger projects were funded in 2012, after the pioneering double fine project. Many of them will come out this year.
Also, if the kickstarters are done properly, the game is finished and ready to sell after its done and they've at least not lost money on the project. So any additional sales should mostly be pure profit.
