Destructoid - Publishers accused of trying to exploit Kickstarter.
"We were actually contacted by some publishers over the last few months that wanted to use us to do a Kickstarter," he revealed on his team's own KS page. "I said to them 'So, you want us to do a Kickstarter for, using our name, we then get the Kickstarter money to make the game, you then publish the game, but we then don't get to keep the brand we make and we only get a portion of the profits.'
"They said, 'Yes'."

It looked like Publisher was telling Dev to start a kickstarter using Dev's name, gather the money up, make a game, then in exchange for publishing/advertising, Publisher gets to keep the IP and pays royalties to the dev.
Which sounds about as appealing as a shit sandwich. But I could see this being tempting for a lot of devs. For many games, Kickstarter simply does not provide enough funds. A game with a scope like Planetary Annihilation is going to cost more than $2m to make. That money has to come from somewhere.
If some publisher goes to a dev, "Pitch your game on KS, and if you make $1m, we'll kick in the $4m more you need to finish it, but then we get to keep it." I think some devs might do that, since that's food on the table. And that would happen only between the very top people, so could the rank and file being totally in the dark about it. The only reason we found out about this is that Feargus is principled, independent, and successful already, so he can tell a publisher to fck off. |
