StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm Beta Underway

The StarCraft II Website announces the beginning of beta testing of the Heart of the Swarm expansion for the real-time strategy sequel (thanks BlizzPlanet). They offer a FAQ detailing on how participants are being selected, and the following explanation of what the testing entails:

The Heart of the Swarm beta test has begun! This multiplayer-only test will initially be limited to a select group of pro-gamers, members of the press, Arcade contest winners, and shoutcasters. Beta test participants are not under NDA, so you’re likely going to see live streams of matches, screenshots, and casts of impromptu Heart of the Swarm throwdowns starting . . . mmm, NOW!

We will soon be inviting other players to participate in the beta, so be sure you’ve opted in by clicking on the "Beta Profile Settings" under the Account Management section of your Battle.net account (or just click here). Signing up from a Battle.net account that’s actively playing StarCraft II will help your chances of being selected. Note that opting in doesn't guarantee beta access.

We'll also be working with several fansites and community personalities to provide more opportunities to join the beta test, so keep an eye out here and throughout the StarCraft II community for details as they emerge.

For those who are in the beta already, we appreciate your assistance in helping us test the game. If you’re interested in joining the beta, we wish you luck with the opt-in and (future) giveaways, and hope to see you in a match soon!

I have no interest in the competitive (mulitplayer side) of this game, but the story arc really does interest me.

Unlike D3's childish crapola, the story in SC2 was quite good. I just hope its not the Zerg vievpoint of the same events that happened in SC2 as that would be a fucking rippoff....

From one preview I read, it's apparently about Kerrigan (spoiler) newly returned to human form trying to wrest control of the Zerg from another overmind somewhere.

I have very little interest in this title. Unlike most people, I found SC2 to be terribly bland, and the vaunted "play through the campaign in the order you choose!" turned out to be nothing more than "here's a set of 3 missions. Choose the order in which you want to do them. After that, we take you to a main mission, and then give you 3 more missions. Repeat."

Jedi Academy already did that like 10 years ago. And their original intent was already done by WING COMMANDER fucking eons ago. So why they couldn't make it any more interesting than this shit is beyond me.

Combined with almost every mission having some form of arbitrary time limit, or some dumb ass gimmick as "move all your forces or they'll be swamped by lava lulz!!!", and ugh... I never even replayed it, which probably makes it the first RTS game I only ever played once. I played the original SC probably a dozen times.

Yes, I know, some or most people loved all the gimmicks in SC2, and will call it "a fresh take on RTS!" Everyone's entitled to their opinion. I thought they took SC and made it worse.

If it ever reached 10 bucks or so, I'd probably get it just for the sake of the story (which I admit was at least interesting), but since Blizzard games never get that low, oh well.

Bye SC. It was fun knowing you.
