Ars Technica - Blizzard admits Diablo III is a game that ends.
Just how long should players expect a game to remain fresh and exciting? Do publishers have to treat all AAA games as services that keep us constantly entertained for years or even decades? Have MMOs trained us to feel entitled to games that never actually end? These are the questions that have been circling my head after reading Blizzard's response to player complaints about the lack of compelling "endgame" content in Diablo III. - Diablo 3's poorly planned end-game.
It's a shame that a company with Blizzard's pedigree couldn't have foreseen the monotony and disillusionment that could creep in less then two months after the game's release. Blizzard has some good storytellers and a fantastic animation staff. Something as intriguing as Halo 4's planned Spartan Ops episodic content would have been enough to keep me engrossed until the inevitable expansion, even if it was every month instead of every week.

In the end, I guess, players with the same mentality as die-hard MMO players will continue to populate the Diablo III servers. Diablo III was an enjoyable game for the first 80 hours.

If you ask me the 1 thing I think Diablo 3 really fucked up it was simple this. They dumbed everything down. The world, the characters, the story and the skills. Even the items. A proper Diablo 2 sequel would have done what Diablo 2 did, just way more complex, more hardcore.

But hard-core doesn't sell 10 million copies. This is really not the same company as back then. With Diablo 2 Blizzard did exactly that, they made Diablo 1, just way more hardcore, complex and deeper. Same for Warcraft 2 to 3. But everything after WOW has just been a huge disappointment. First the Starcraft 2 clone, that literally does nothing new or better than Starcraft 1. Then the wow expansions (pandas??) and now Diablo 3. It makes perfect sense, and makes me regret that I didn't reach this conclusion earlier.

Blizzard does no longer exist. The blizzard at least, I think off when I hear Blizzard. The blizzard that made Diablo 2, the blizzard that made Warcraft 3. That company does no longer exist. They do not make games because they have a story to tell, or because they have a new gameplay idea. They make games to milk their name now.

I only even got Diablo 3 because one of my friends bought me a copy (mainly to tease me, it worked ,p) But I didn't get Starcraft 2, I am no fan of rehashes of old games, of remakes that change nothing, that do nothing better, that don't make the game more hardcore.
