Not too surprised at Crytek going F2P. The market for big-budget shooters is pretty saturated and it's hard to compete with the established brands. The Crysis games are very costly to make and I'm guessing not very profitable after you deduct the development and marketing expenses. When selling a million units is considered a failure, you know there's something wrong. F2P offers a long-term, sustainable business model where you generate steady revenue and don't have to rely on publishers.
It'll be interesting to see what kind of F2P games they make. Warface doesn't look particularly inspired so hopefully their other projects will be a bit more innovative. |
