Out of the Blue

Got to play a bit more Diablo III last night with my pal MrKawfy, as we dueled both the monsters of hell and the server outages from hell. The game is loads of fun, but the connectivity woes did nothing to discourage the idea that requiring a persistent connection for a single-player game is an absolutely terrible idea from the player's perspective. I guess the only surprise is that so many people were saying just that long before the game's release that it's hard to believe Activision Blizzard would not have been more prepared for the launch in an attempt to prove the skeptics wrong. Well, whatever they did failed. Score one for the skeptics. Here's hoping they straighten this mess up soon.

Is this all that different than what happened with HL2?

Yeah, I know, people feel it isn't necessary, but people felt that wasn't, too. It's the first major launch of a new technology, and it failed. Miserably. But that doesn't mean it's indicative of what will happen in the future.

I get reasons for being against online-only-SP, but this seems like something that gets better over time. There was a huge capacity surge that is difficult to avoid. When more games do this the capacity will be built up and, after a while, there will be no surge that could exceed available capacity.

Oh, like with Steam, you mean? Yeah, it's awesome how when there's a big sale on now, Steam just keeps working as normal, no issues on the store, no messages that the servers are too busy to handle your request, and no... oh wait.

Hey, if people want to sign up for it because it's Blizzard, I don't care. If SP eventually completely goes away, shrug, I have plenty of backlogged games to tide me over for years. But it'll be amusing to see the rage at how people can't play even while they're happily forking over more money to Blizzard and their ilk.

Had this been an EA game, the outrage would have reached truly epic proportions. But it's Blizzard, so everyone is like "Oh, what does it matter? I went outside! Uptime was still like 70%! On LAUNCH DAY! It's FANTASTIC!"
