Mass Effect 3 Ending Changes Planned

The BioWare Blog has a post from BioWare co-founder Dr. Ray Muzyka confirming that criticism of the ending of Mass Effect 3 has had a massive effect on them, and they will indeed be changing the way the game ends, as they said they might. Here's a bit on their change in plans, and what lead to this point:

Building on their research, Exec Producer Casey Hudson and the team are hard at work on a number of game content initiatives that will help answer the questions, providing more clarity for those seeking further closure to their journey. Youll hear more on this in April. Were working hard to maintain the right balance between the artistic integrity of the original story while addressing the fan feedback weve received. This is in addition to our existing plan to continue providing new Mass Effect content and new full games, so rest assured that your journey in the Mass Effect universe can, and will, continue.

The reaction to the release of Mass Effect 3 has been unprecedented. On one hand, some of our loyal fans are passionately expressing their displeasure about how their game concluded; we care about this feedback, and were planning to directly address it. However, most folks appear to agree that the game as a whole is exceptional, with more than 75 critics giving it a perfect review score and a review average in the mid-90s. Net, Im proud of the team, but we can and must always strive to do better.

If anyone who comes here is curious as to why we hate the ending so and has some time to read a bit give this a look.

A Logical Breakdown of Why the Mass Effect 3 Ending Makes No Sense

The problem I have with that ... article? is that it takes a nitpicking view of something that wouldn't be nitpicked if it weren't for the bad ending.

Or, to be more specific, take the first point. The reason that you hear "They're all gone" over the radio is because the game is trying to inform you that no one else made it through the beam. It's trying to set up the drama of "YOU MUST MAKE IT, EVERYTHING DEPENDS ON YOU". If you woke up, and heard "Yeah, about 20 guys made it through the beam", that'd kinda ruin the suspense.

And then there's points 2 and 3, where point 3 very clearly explains point 2. The reason for Shepard to get knocked out is to stop Shepard from being dead. If Shepard didn't get knocked out, Harbinger would have known he was there and made sure he was dead. Plus, of course, the above mentioned "dramatic tension" angle, which requires that everyone else not have made it to the beam, which wouldn't work if Shepard had already made it to the beam.

You could take lots of other sequences in the game, and subject them to the same level of scrutiny, and find all sorts of "errors" - but no one is looking for them, because there's no reason to. This level of scrutiny over the ending is unwarranted - once you've admitted the ending is bad, why go into such tedious detail over every little instance? If they'd done the same ending, but included extra footage of what happened to the other characters in the game, and not had the Normandy flying away for some reason, most people would have overlooked most of these minor flaws. Seems silly to dwell on them now.
