The Old Republic Update Next Week

BioWare announces next Tuesday will see the launch of Rise of the Rakghouls, a new content update for Star Wars: The Old Republic. Here's what this will add to the month-old MMORPG: "Rise of the Rakghouls features a new Flashpoint and a new Operation as well as a number of changes made throughout the entire game, including level 50 bracketing for PvP WarZones, the addition of anti-aliasing and changes to Open World PvP on Ilum." Looking ahead, they say they will continue to support the game with such updates "throughout the year on a regular cadence," and the update that follows this is due in March with new Flashpoints, Operations, WarZones, and game systems. Here's word on the new content in next week's patch:

  • Flashpoint: Kaon Under Siege is a completely new and unique group combat experience located on Kaon, a planet in the Tion Hegemony, a strategically important sector of the galaxy that has remained neutral, groups of up to four Republic or Imperial players must race to Kaon to eliminate the Rakghouls outbreak, securing the allegiance of the Tion Hegemony for their respective sides. This Flashpoint will be available for level 50 characters only and will feature Normal and Heroic modes.
  • Operation: Karagga’s Palace, is a continuation of the game’s second launch Operation. In the Operation, teams of 8 or 16 players will face off against Karagga and the Hutt Cartel after the Hutts abandon their famous neutrality and breach agreements with both the Republic and Empire. Concerned by the threat of another combatant in the war for galactic control, both factions send teams of their most powerful heroes to confront Karagga and determine his intentions. This Operation will feature Normal, Heroic and Nightmare difficulty modes.

GW2 is removing the concept of 'end game' as it stands in MMOGs today by removing raiding entirely and making 'leveling' less than a strict linear path. Because you can de-level and be boosted in levels to do virtually any activity in the game, at any level, essentially the entire game is end game. You might be level 10 and get boosted to 80 for PvP or you might be 80 and get de-leveled to 30 when your guild gets together to do the Tequatl dragon's Dynamic Event chain. Likewise you might really like the look of the gear from dungeon A that is level 50. So you are de-leveled to about 53 and run the explorable mode (which is branching, has dynamic content within and is decidedly challenging). You run it several times and get the set of items, then work towards getting some transmutation stones to convert your 80 gear's stats to that new outfit.

So you see, the entire game is end game. And that doesn't mean there isn't anything to do at 80 either. Just like GW1 there is still a plethora of content to explore, your branching personal story to finish (I can say one thing about GW2's story over SWTORs, it can actually change based on the choices you make). There are guild and personal achievements to attain, that mean more than just wow style points. There are traits and elite skills to obtain. Elites require completion of their own individual activity, and some certainly will not be easy. Traits will work similarly, and they augment your characters abilities to make them your own.

So yea, no raiding in GW2. Instead they did what MMOGs probably should have done half a decade ago, make it so the game doesn't start or stop at cap, but rather make an MMOG where all content is potentially end game content.

Edit: on topic, I'm enjoying SWTOR a lot right now. I am rather 'over' themepark MMOGs as they stand today (WOW clones) and will almost certainly get bored FAST at 50. But I level slowly, my main is only lvl 29 atm and I've been playing since the 15th. In the end the game is an enjoyable hold over until The Secret World hits and I can decide if it's worth playing.

In the end though no matter what I'm playing, when GW2 comes out I'm jumping ship. The only way I won't is if the game bombs, if everything they've said about the game is a lie. But then again I already know it isn't. I've played the game, several hours of it in fact. PAX East was fun, had a lot of different things to do in the game and I got a really good taste of just how much of a leap forward the game really is, even right out of the gate at level 1.

So essentially there is raiding you just don't have to grind to max level to participate. Cool concept and I hope you enjoy your time in GW2.

Personally I'm enjoying ToR even though I'm very critical of the way Bioware's titles have been developed recently, I'm having fun with the game, playing with friends and that to me is what's important.

GW2 is going in a different direction and actually sounds like it very well could be innovative in some ways. Still though GW fans pissing in TOR threads really isn't called for, not really pointing at you but it seems every time there's a TOR thread, Cutter feels the need to let everyone know just how great GW2 is. Personally I don't understand it, but hey whatever.
