To me it all boils down to that second analog stick. That simple little addition opens up worlds of possibilities.
I started out loving my original PSP slim (that's when I jumped in). The graphics were just awesome. I can still fire it up today and just be blow away by how nice the games can look. But any action oriented game was just too cumbersome to play. Aside from motion controls, every console uses the same exact controller scheme and either that particular scheme actually is the best, or I'm just so damn used to it that I can't shape my mind around trying to control my on-screen avatar in a different way.
Finally having the second analog stick means any and every PS1, and PS2 game should be playable without any need for modification. Heck, give me a NGP plus the entire PS2 library and I'll be a happy camper for the next 3 years. Now throw in some of the interesting new stuff they might be able to do with touch, and this seems like a winner to me.
I really don't understand the idea that our phones can be a replacement for the portable consoles. Just as I described above, it's not the CPU or graphical power of the device that wins out, it's the control. Touchscreens are OK for some things, but really, the range of games that just intuitively "work" with nothing more than a touchscreen is pretty limited. |
