StarCraft II to Go 3D Via a Patch

A story from about a week ago called StarCraft II: One Month to Takeoff on IGN talks with StarCraft II Production Director Chris Sigaty about the upcoming launch of the real-time strategy sequel. They describe their impressions of the game running in 3D, and learn from Chris this will be added through a post-release patch: "No; but we will be releasing 3D in the first few months, for those Nvidia cards and screens that support it," Chris states, following with a preemptive: "we're optimising for all systems." So 3D games are now being referred to as 2D games, so that stereo 3D can be referred to as 3D? Oh great. What do we call regular 2D games? And on that note: with Starcraft being a 2D game, this was a really confusing title.
