MechWarrior 4 Workarounds

The recent free release of MechWarrior 4 has gone about as smoothly as the run-up to the launch of the free version of the mech game, which is to say not particularly. The Mektek website is currently showing an Apache placeholder page (presumably recovering from demand-related overloads), and many users have reported problems attempting to obtain and install the game. A post on this site has instructions on how to try and get the game client as a straight torrent download, as well as a couple of tips on how to get it to run. It's not clear where things stand right now, but hopefully that can help some of the folks having problems with this.

Why they didn't publish a torrent in the first place, and prefer it, is beyond me. Bundle an installer with the assets (which is 98% of the data) and just get the few necessary updates, keeping it in your MTX ecosystem but saving on bandwidth and embarrassing downtime when you're trying to get good PR for future projects. It's not 2001, where most people are on dialup and 2GB is obscenely huge. These days, 2GB of free game means people with even a passing interest will download it almost without thinking. For Wowbagger or anyone else who can't get the torrent, I've rehosted it on MediaFire here (Edit: This torrent is the one from ISOHunt, so it has DHT/PX enabled as well as using a variety of public trackers like openbittorrent and ilibr in addition to Mektek's tracker, which as of this post is still up) This comment was edited on May 2, 2010, 21:47.
