Any video drivers that are part of the kernel get updated along with any changes that would "break" them... Any outside the kernel get updated by whoever maintains them soon enough... Most of the time, all that's needed after a kernel update is a recompile of the driver...
Also, why would a user-space app like this care about your specific video driver anyway? It will presumably just use OpenGL and such, and just work no matter what video driver you're using... "There aren't any standards"? POSIX, OpenGL, OpenAL, SDL, etc... User-space apps don't need to concern themselves with a constantly updated kernel (even assuming their distro constantly updates it, or the user does themselves)...
Note that commercial games like Q3A STILL run on all modern distros, despite being released years ago (when it ran on all distros at the time, too)... So, it's really not as hard to support any/all distros as you seem to think... |
