Out of the Blue

Today is the 65th anniversary of the famed raising of the flag over Iwo Jima during World War II. It is also the anniversary of the beginning of the siege of the Alamo, and the birthday of Dolly the sheep, the world's most famous clone (apologies to Spider-Man).

I saw the 60 minutes segment on Bloom Energy. I hope they are right about what they are saying they can do. Consider if you could have an appliance a bit smaller that a standard kitchen refrigerator which would produce all the energy you needed for your house. It would be world changing.

Even if the cost was the same as current power, it would be a total win since 50% of the energy currently produced is "lost" during transmission. If you are producing it at the house... no transmission loss (effectively). That would mean 50% less energy production would be required! Yeah, you still need natural gas or something else as fuel, but you don't lose 50% of natural gas during transport to your home.

They still have two major hurdles. 1) Prove they can produce "house sized" units for under $5,000. 2) Prove they can mass produce the product. I suspect the energy analyst on the segment was right. If it really works, and they prove they can get over the hurdles. Odds are you'll have a GE branded (or other major corp.) box in your basement, but it would be the same technology.

Truth is brutal. Prepare for pain.
