EA Server Shutdowns

A new EA Service Update announces plans to shut down online servers for some of their previous titles (thanks Kotaku), though the number of games affected is not as extensive as the list of games for which support was discontinued. There are only two PC games on the hit list for March 16: Lord of the Rings: Conquest and Mercenaries 2: World in Flames. They also want it known this is not undertaken lightly, saying: "As background information, the games scheduled for shutdown in March and April 2010 represent less than 0.3% of all peak online players across all EA titles. Despite some people's perception, there is a lot of behind-the-scenes work involved with keeping these older games up and running. We would rather our hard-working engineering and IT staff focus on keeping a positive experience for the other 99.7% of customers playing our more popular games. These decisions to retire games is never easy. The EA development teams and operational staff pour their hearts into these games almost as much as the customers playing them and it is hard to see one retired. We hope you have gotten many hours of enjoyment out of the games and we appreciate your ongoing patronage." The full list of EA's discontinued game servers follows.

7. Re: EA Server Shutdowns Feb 17, 2010, 00:23 Stormsinger

The manpower for keeping a server running is pretty damned close to zero. When I left Simutronics, we were still running a server for the original Cyberstrike game, which had maybe a dozen players by that time (total, not simultaneous). Basically, running it meant starting the shell script after a power failure. Same was true for all but our newest games...there really isn't any cost to continue running one, outside of replacing hardware that dies (a rare and cheap event).

If their servers take much more than that to run, especially on games several years old that see no updates, then their programmers and admins are completely incompetent.

Meh. They can't be obligated to support these games for eternity, and if the 0.3% figure is accurate, I can't see any argument for wasting manpower on them.
