Checkpoint-only saves |

Why are almost all game developers (on the PC anyway) writing games that have only checkpoint saves? I don't understand. It can completely ruin the experience and enjoyment of playing through the game when you're constantly thinking that you need a save and not taking the game in the way you want to, and you have to replay certain parts over and over again until you get to a checkpoint. I don't understand why we are not allowed to save when we want to?!?!?!
With Crysis 2, Crytek wanted us to (I think) "enjoy the game, and not worry about when it saves" to improve the flow of it? I have had to play parts of games over and over because I can not save just before the difficult part. What a laugh!
I play games because I am controlling part of it (vs. watching a movie where you are only watching it), and I like to take my time with them and really take them in and enjoy them. Checkpoint saves make you constantly think, "need a save, need a save", instead of "cool level, cool AI, cool music/sound, etc...). Baffling that we can not save when we want to anymore!
Anyone else have similar thoughts? |
