The Consumerist reports on a discovery made by someone attempting to collect on a $10.00 rebate from Creative Labs that came in the form of a debit card. The card was denied when it was used, because Creative charged a $3.00 maintenance fee to the card every month until its balance reached zero. They point out that this really does make this Creative rebate a "creative rebate," and wisely suggest that if you have such a rebate card you should make use of it before suffering a similar fate. Never buy an item just because it's cheap after rebate. Getting the rebate is more or less a bonus. Yes, generally if you do everything "just right" you will eventually get the rebate (usually 6-12 weeks after sending in the stuff) but occasionally you're just out of luck. (If not getting the rebate means you can't afford the item... don't buy it.) If you want to improve your odds, always make sure to photocopy every frakking item before you send it in.
